The 5 Days Umbwe Route is the most direct and challenging path to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The route quickly leaves the rainforest and climbs through rugged ridges before joining the Machame Route near Barranco Camp, leading to the summit at Uhuru Peak.

DAY 0

Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where a Frontline Safari Tanzania representative welcomes you and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, meet your mountain guide for a full briefing about the Umbwe Route climb, equipment inspection, and safety procedures to ensure you are well prepared for the challenging ascent.

DAY 1

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

After breakfast, drive to Umbwe Gate for registration before beginning your trek through dense rainforest. The trail climbs steeply along narrow ridges and lush forest paths. After about 5–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp at approximately 2,850 meters where you enjoy dinner and rest surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

DAY 2

Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Continue ascending along the steep Umbwe Ridge as the landscape gradually opens from rainforest to moorland. The route offers spectacular views of valleys and ridges before joining the Machame Route. After about 4–5 hours of trekking, reach Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

DAY 3

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a rewarding scramble with breathtaking views. Continue trekking across ridges and valleys toward Barafu Camp at 4,600 meters. Arrive in the afternoon, rest, and prepare your equipment for the midnight summit attempt with an early dinner and briefing from your guides.
Uhuru Peak

Day 4

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Begin the summit climb shortly after midnight under a sky full of stars. Trek slowly toward Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Celebrate reaching the highest point in Africa before descending back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch. Continue down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters for dinner and overnight stay.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Day 5

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest trails to Mweka Gate where you receive your official summit certificate. Your driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi where you can relax, shower, and celebrate completing your Kilimanjaro climb.
