Mkomazi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and least visited national parks, offering a truly wild and exclusive safari experience. Located in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, the park forms part of the same ecosystem as Kenya’s Tsavo National Parks. Its semi-arid savannah landscapes, acacia woodlands, and dramatic mountain backdrops create a striking contrast to the lush parks of the northern circuit.
Mkomazi is especially known for its successful black rhino and African wild dog conservation programs, making it a unique destination for wildlife enthusiasts. With fewer visitors compared to Serengeti or Ngorongoro, the park provides peaceful game viewing and a strong sense of untouched wilderness, ideal for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path safari.

Mkomazi National Park is famous for its black rhino sanctuary, one of the few places in Tanzania where these critically endangered animals are protected and can be seen. The park is also home to African wild dogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species such as eland and hartebeest.
Birdlife is abundant, with over 450 species recorded, including ostriches, hornbills, secretary birds, and numerous raptors. The park’s dry savannah ecosystem supports species adapted to arid conditions, offering a different wildlife experience compared to the greener northern parks.
